Wine Tasting: Indie Wineries

Indie Wineries

Back again is the coolest distributor this side of the Duwamish. Much like Indie films, Indie Wineries takes us away from the normal blockbuster style of an experience. Showing off the cerebral edges of the genre at hand. You have to think more askew when you consume “out of the box”. Come and let Graham, from Indie Wineries show you how it is done. These wines have been touched by a winemaker that wants to do things in their own way. Damn the Torpedoes! We will start with a BANG with the mad scientist from Minumus with a silly named but seriously good Gruner Veltliner, then to Gavi, Italy for a rich and warm white wine. Backing that up with a red and bubbly “aint’ your gramma’s” Lambrusco, then an organic and NO sulfur Syrah, and a Northern Spanish super blend: dark and lush. We will finish with a blend of two Italian grapes that make the wine elegant and warm.

So, bring your socks (to be knocked off of course) and your taste buds to Humble Vine Saturday, October 13th , 4pm-8pm.

Minimus, “I Have Powdery Mildew” Gruner Veltliner $32

NERD ALERT!!! Another wine from the mad scientist @ Minumus. Fruit is from the Johann Vineyard which is biodynamically farmed.  55 cases produced! Grapes afflicted with powdery mildew and left macerating on the skins for 2 days.  Vines react to powdery mildew creating response expressed rotundone, a peppery expression.  Also, mildew breaks down grapes, concentrating acid and sugar, adding savory mushroom notes to the wine and concentrates the acidity.

Terre di Mate, “Regaldina “Gavi 2015, $24
100% Cortese.  Cortese is a white grape variety that is most famous for its role in the crisp, lime-scented wines of Gavi. The variety is known for its bracingly high acidity and its ability to retain freshness, even when grown in hot environments. Apple, peach and honeydew flavors are associated with Cortese wine, with lime, almond and light herbal or grassy aromas.

La Collina Quaresimo 2017 Lambrusco $21

Active, natural wine with lots of personality. Nose has both a slightly volatile apple cider vinegar note, and gorgeous and intense honey. Palate brings bright acidity, ripe blackberries, black tea, tannic grip, and sweet cardamom. Finish brings out an earthiness with a gentle, but long, presence. Love this stuff!

Domaine des Carabiniers Syrah $18

Horse Flowers (Domaine des Carabiniers) is a family owned winery operated since 1974.  The 40-hectare estate has been certified Organic since 1997, and Biodynamic since 2009.

Harvest takes place at night to prevent oxidation of the grapes, avoiding the use of SO2 (no sulfur) in order to retain freshness and protect the aromas.  Gentle vinification in a gravity fed winery using indigenous yeasts also helps to retain purity of fruit.

As Furnias , “As Furnias” $21

This is the kind of wine that catches our attention on paper: a renegade "non-vintage" (2012) blend of obscure, local Galician red grapes Brancellao, Caiño Longo, Caiño da Terra, Sousón and Espadeiro, farmed without chemicals and fermented with native yeasts, with the bare minimum of SO2. The wine lives up to its fascinating description. It is fresh and delicious, with herb- and flower-inflected purple berry fruit, gentle baking spice, and a hint of cedar. Best served with a light chill.

San Lorenzo “La Gattara” $32

Biodynamic., 70% Montepulciano/30% Sangiovese blend from San Lorenzo, it is like a warm embrace, soft and re-assuring.  30 months in small oak barrels, a deep dark ruby color with purple background. Very aromatic wine, red flowers in the nose, black cherries, black berries fruits, intense spices, licorice, vanilla and pepper, coffee a little bit tobacco. Wine with excellent smooth tannins, balanced, with great texture and elegant finish with mineral aftertaste.
