Wine TAsting: Washington

Washington Wines

As we celebrate Washington wine month, we look for unique varietals and wine practices not afforded to the California/Oregon Makers. We start with Chardonnay that is grown up and down the west coast, but our Washington Chards’ walk just a bit different than its siblings. A bit riper/Fruit foreword perhaps? We will borrow a grape and a winemaker from Spain, a fresh and super cool: Albarino! We then, set our sights on a brisk and unique Viognier. Our first sip of red wine will be Blue Franc (see Blaufrankish/Lemberger), so fresh, so clean. On to the King of grapes with a Cabernet Sauvignon, built by négociants from the San Juan Islands, Yarrr! We finish with a Tempranillo from a Garagíste. Big and hearty flavors from this Spanish grape.

We will see you in Humble Vine, Saturday Aug 18th 4pm - 8pm.

Radius Chardonnay, 2016, $12

Welcoming toasted oak notes swirl around dried apricot, apple cobbler, and baking spice aromas. A rich palate filled with intense fruit and honey. Lingering residual sugar is balanced by acidity for a clean finish.

Idilico, Albarino, 2016 $16

Coming from Dutchman Vineyard in the Yakima Valley, aromas of Muscat, dried orange peel, honeydew melon rind and citrus are followed by full-feeling lightly spritzy tropical fruit flavors. It delivers appeal.

Jackalope, Voyager Viognier, 2016 $22

50% sourced from Underwood Mountain Vineyard in the Columbia Gorge (aged in neutral French oak) and 50% Sourced from Serenade Vineyard in the Rogue Valley (fermented and aged in stainless steel). Minerality! Spring blossoms! Gobs of citrus! Not your thick and heavy Viognier, this is a lively and crisp expression of the grape.

Shooting Star, Blue Franc, 2014 $13

The wine is clean, crisp, and unpretentious with tons of fruit, including warm berry pie, traces of pepper, almond, cherry and cinnamon. The Steele Shooting Star Blue Franc has soft tannins, medium body, and is the perfect red wine to enjoy over the summer with any festive occasion.

Ded Reckoning, Cabernet Sauvignon, WA $21

Sheridan Vineyard using 100% estate grown Cabernet. This ever-popular Cabernet has classic Sheridan fruit with layers of black fruits, tobacco, coffee and that very distinctive note of citrus rind that is a trademark of this exotic and exclusive vineyard. An amazing value.

Omnivore, Tempranillo, 2010 $26

A Rioja-esque wine from Columbia Valley. Oak Aging for 20 months. Big flavors of vanilla, bold baking spices, Black pepper, and a background of bramble. Vineyards: Konnowoc, Elephant Mountain, Sugarloaf, and Spice Cabinet.
