Northern SPAIN
Grape vines have been growing throughout Spain since at least 3000 B.C., although it was not until 1000 B.C. that winemaking began here in earnest – a skill brought by Phoenician traders from the eastern Mediterranean. Today, Spain is home to more vines than any other country on Earth, and has a national wine output exceeded only by France and Italy. We taste an outstanding Cava sparkler from the East and a delicious white Albarino from the West. Then 2 bold Tempranillo: One from Rioja in the north and one from the central area of Ribera del Duoro. Hooray!!!

Heres the lineup
Jane Ventura, Cava Rose. $24
This hand-riddled, hand-disgorged Cava bottling was grown organically and is comprised of 100% Garnatxa Negra. Founded in 1911, Jane Ventura makes elegant, extremely classy Cavas the old-school way, using Methode Champenoise. This rosé bottling shows yeasty aromas of brioche on the nose, a creamy, velvety mousse, and fragrant notes of wild strawberries on the palate.
Mila, Albarino , Rias Baixas, Spain $19
Light to medium bodied. Lots of fresh citrus aromas: Meyer lemon, and lime. Combined with subtle white peach, jasmine and eucalyptus. Salty, mineral palate. Dry with refreshing acidity. Another great Albarino!
Cantos de Valpiedra, Crianza, Rioja Spain $29
100% Tempranillo with 12 months in American and French oak barrels.
Dark purple tones with violet flashes. Big aromatic intensity and a very marked minerality which blend together with aromas from the barrel like vanilla, spices and tobacco. This is round and intense with a sweet mid palate, showing off finesse.
Cepa 21, Ribera del Duoro, Ribera del Duoro, Spain $34
The nose is dominated by Tempranillo varietals matured over time in the barrel but retaining their freshness well. The aroma is enriched by the notes of a respectful barrel aging and subtle hints of spices and balsamic, licorice and mocha accents, which play off flavors of black cherry coulis and smoky minerals. This is structured by deftly meshed, sinewy tannins and a spine of vibrant acidity.
