Buonna Note, “Sant Ambrogio” Red Blend, Columbia Gorge, Washington $24
The Buona Notte wines are low intervention Italian varietals from the Columbia Gorge. All wines are unfinned, unfiltered, and have no more than 20ppm sulfur total at bottling. Sangiovese, Merlot, and a pinch of Syrah, fermented in neutral barrel. A delicious, juicy, easy-going red Italian style red blend.
Idiots Grace, Syrah Grenache Columbia Gorge, Washington $27
Minimal intervention in the process – with wild fermentation, sparing use of oak, and limited extraction, all in the pursuit of freshness, balance and structure. Syrah and Grenache are blended in this old world style wine. She has an earthy nose with dried cherry, red plum, strawberries, red currant, pepper, leather, and tobacco. Medium body, but still a big and bolder style red.
Upsidedown, Method Red $29
Always on the top tier of my favorites list. The Method red is 45% Nebbiolo, 30% Cabernet, 25% Malbec. Aromas of straw, peat, and cherry followed by a palate full of the same, along with plentiful cherry flavors. The acidity gives it a pleasing snap. And a portion of each bottle helps to donate to Chill.org, a charity that inspires young people through boardsports and builds a more equitable outdoor community. Very cool.
Upsidedown, “Cluster F@*#” Grenache, Yakima , WA $32
Seth and Audrey Kitzke are legitimately committed to making raw wines with no coloring, chemical adjustment or other overt manipulations. This wine is fermented with partial carbonic whole-cluster fermentation, which means many of the berries aren’t even crushed before fermentation. This produces a wine with a very bright color and incredibly expressive aromas. Carbonic fermentation gives off bright, candied notes and savory flavors, which is why it works particularly well with the Grenache grape. This 100% Grenache is vibrant with ripe red raspberries, balanced by aromas of chocolate, smoke, herbs, and a little bit of minerality. It goes down real easy.
