Wine Tasting Wednesday: Nebbiolo

  • Humble Vine 824 SW 152nd Street (map)

Nebbiolo!!!!!

My favorite grape! Nebbiolo. From Piedmont Italy. This grape is the same that crafts the famous wines from the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco. We will usually find it medium bodied, and light in color, sometimes mistaken for a rose! But fear not it will bite you back with a flurry of tannin enveloped in strawberry and cherry deliciousness. Super dry and crisp. Barolo is aged for decades, but who wants to do that?! Drink these guys young - 10 years old and be delighted at the often found tar, leather, and classic Italian earth tones. Another perfect wine for the oncoming fall harvests and big table meals. All of these wines are 100% Nebbiolo.

Ahhhh Nebbiolo…

September 13th

2-8 PM

Wine Tasting: $20

Cantina del Pino Langhe Nebbiolo. $25

Grown in Barbaresco and aged for eight months in stainless steel this wine has all the fruity and spicy characteristics of a traditional Barbaresco, but it is meant to be consumed young. Complex and smooth with good structure of fruit and tannins. This vibrant young red opens with aromas strawberry, dark cherry and a whisper of graphite. The bright, polished palate doles out morello cherry, white pepper and a hint of licorice alongside firm but refined tannins.

Sbiorolo, Marchesi di Barolo, Langhe Nebbiolo $26

Garnet. Violet on the nose, not super pronounced. Bone dry, elegant fruit, high tannins, very fine, good acidity, great balance and medium to long finish. Cherries and cranberry, with hints to the tar and leather we see in Barolo’s.

Chiesa, Nebbiolo d’Alba   $29

Not rare but certainly unique a Nebbiolo with the Alba designation. Most you will see from the langhe like the last two. Look for aromas of cherries, raspberries, leather, tobacco, stable, spice and oak. Medium-bodied and very dry, light, elegant, rural and balsamic with notes of ripe cherries, red currants, tobacco, spice, smoke and oak. Lots of juicy acidity. Firm mature tannins. Long finish. Well balanced and layered with good structure and complexity.

Cascina Alberta, Barbaresco “Giacone”  $41

Cascina Alberta is a small, family run, 5 hectare domaine. The color is deep garnet red, the nose expresses a complexity of aromas of violets and roses, with spicy hints of leather, licorice and tobacco. The taste is full and intense with great tannin structure that gives it longevity.

Time: 2pm - 8pm or until the bottles run dry!
