Wine Tasting : Columbia Valley

Columbia Valley, WA

Welcome to 2019. We will start off the new year with a curation of Washington wines. A wonderful rose and four reds that are great examples of what Columbia Valley can provide for fine wine making. Upsidedown wines are kind and donate proceeds to charities. Shooting Star wines is from Steele wines from California but ol’ Jed Steele loved his time up here so much he bought land and started farming grapes in the Columbia valley. Kamiak has honored the Yakima Tribe by naming the wine after a great chief that once helped nurture the agricultural areas of the Columbia Valley.

Upsidedown Wines, “Rescue” Rose $24

Seth and Audrey Kitzke have created their own brand to not only showcase different styles of wine from their family’s Kitzke Cellars but also to assist some of their favorite non-profit groups. This wine is a rare example of Nebbiolo in the state. A pretty pale peach, almost bronze color, it brings aromas of mineral and strawberry. The tart flavors drink bone dry with medium-bodied cherry notes that draw out on the finish. Lovely and refreshing. Upsidedown “Rescue” wines donate a percentage of proceeds to animal shelters.

Shooting Star, Cotes De Columbia $15

Composed primarily of Lemberger, this wine is fruit forward, with notes of blue and black berries along with generous cranberry and spice accents. The flavors are light and cranberry tart, tapering toward the finish. It's a pleasant easy drinker, with a focus on purity.

Luscious raspberry flavors compliment the medium body of this wine that delivers luscious acidity and a velvety lingering finish. 42% Syrah, 32% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Tempranillo, 3% Cab.

Procedo, Red Blend $25

Pairs well with a grilled ribeye or ribs. 48% Syrah, 30% Counoise, 17% Mourvédre, 5% Grenache

 Upsidedown Wines, Method Red $28

Their Method Red is a tip of the cap to Super Tuscans, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Nebbiolo (33%) and Sangiovese (22%). It opens with fruity and alluring aromas of blackberry and cherry cola and follows through similar ripe and delicious flavors, backed by black cherry-skin tannins that show refinement.
